Welcome to the Caregivers First Initiative Blog!

Our goal is to support people taking care of a loved one. We are based in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, and all the resources we talk about are specific to this county. However, we also give lots of practical tips that could be useful to caregivers anywhere.

What you'll find in this blog:

-Practical tips and resources that will help you and your family
-Basic information on programs and resources available in Allegheny County and how to access them
-Ideas for taking care of yourself and making sure you stay healthy

We'll guide you through finding and accessing a wide range of resources, including county-provided services, private pay resources, and volunteer groups. In addition, you'll find health and safety tips for you and your loved one, information on dealing with specific situations or diseases, and hands-on strategies for dealing with difficult issues at home. From time to time you'll also see information on community classes or events you might be interested in, or helpful books, devices, and technology.

How to navigate:

If you don't feel comfortable diving in to the blog, we suggest you begin with the "Where to Start" page. You can also navigate using the labels on the right of the blog. Clicking on a word there will bring up several articles related to that topic. If you're looking for a specific article (perhaps you read it a while back), try entering a key word in the search bar on the right. We also have an alphabetical archive of all our articles so far, which you can browse by clicking here.

Questions or more information:

The blog is ever-evolving and we add information about once a week. If you don't see what you're looking for here yet, consider contacting us or wait and check back later--we may get to it eventually!

We are always delighted to hear from people with feedback or specific questions. We will do our best to point you in the right direction, but complex problems may not be easy for us to address over email or through the blog. If that's the case, we may ask to speak with you to see what we can figure out together.

Happy reading, and keep up the good work you do!
